Slip, Slop, Save: Kiwis stick to NZ’s backyard this summer, new research reveals

As many as 71% of New Zealanders who have made holiday plans this summer intend to holiday locally, according to a new survey by market research companies Perceptive and Sapien.

The survey, which spoke to over 1,500 New Zealanders between August and October about their summer holiday plans, also revealed that baches (41%), staying with friends or family (38%), and caravan/campervan and camping (36%) outranked hotels (28%) as Kiwis’ preferred summer accommodation for those planning a local holiday.

“We’re seeing Kiwis opting for cheaper, budget-friendly holidays this summer. But that doesn’t mean fun is off the table,” says Dan Shaw, Managing Director at Perceptive.

“Of the New Zealanders staying local, four out of ten plan to get active in NZ’s great outdoors with activities such as tramping, biking or snorkelling.”

When it comes to planning a local holiday, researching things to do (47%) and places to visit (41%) are top of the list, suggesting Kiwis will be flocking to homegrown activities, sights and experiences.

“Cost-of-living is seeing a return to NZ’s backyard, especially for families and younger Kiwis,” says Dan Shaw.

Of the under 35-year-olds who have made summer plans, 82% are opting to stay in NZ this summer. Kiwis with children at home are also more likely to have plans to remain in the country.
